The main pollutants are airborne fine particles. These particles are such as black and oily particles visible on the white table garden in urban areas. But they also come from spreading products like fertilizers or pesticides in growing areas (cereals, vineyards …), gas (NOx) emitted from vehicle exhausts and ozone (O3).
The first signs are irritation and inflammation of the skin, which becomes very sensitive and intolerant . This can be explained by alterations in the lipids of the skin surface that will affect their role as a protective barrier . The quality of secreted sebum is also changed due to these particles. Thus it no longer plays its protective role but accumulates in the opening of the pores and expands. And this subsequently cause the appearance of blackheads. All this contributes to the general drying of the skin which becomes uncomfortable .
This oxidation effect is also felt in more depth. It combines indeed to the harmful effects of UV radiation. And may explain the earlier appearance of dark spots and hyper pigmentation in the geographical areas where there is more pollution .
Start with a thorough cleansing. To remove any dust particles that have been deposited on the skin during the day. It is preferred to cleanse your face. Preferred is a cleanser which is more efficient to rinse. However, if your skin is more sensitive and will not tolerate than it can be replaced by a derma-cleanser. That derma-cleanser is applied with gentle massage with fingers and rinse with normal water.
It is important to stay well hydrated. A moisturizer helps to restore the skin. It is a barrier for better defense against aggression of pollutants, while having a calming role for comfort.
Sunscreen : Finally, do not forget to apply an effective sunscreen (50+). We know that the aggression of pollutants is enhanced by that of UV radiation, especially UVA. It is must to apply Sunscreen.
Proper cleansing and moisturizing restores the skin and are the best weapons to protect the skin. Beware of overly aggressive treatments such as scrubs or peels. They are often poorly tolerated because the skin has become sensitive and often hyper reactive.
All foods containing Vitamin C (parsley, pepper, lemon, etc) , vitamin E ( wheat germ oil , hazel nuts, olive oil etc) are best to protect the skin.
