Some of the most common skincare mistakes that people make when taking care of their skin are detailed below – take a look and see if any of them apply to you.

Mistake #1: Using harsh cleansers

Some people prefer using foamy cleansers as they feel it is doing a better job of cleansing their face. However, the foam in cleansers is completely unnecessary and does very little in terms of cleaning dirt, grime, and bacteria off your face. In fact, it is entirely made up of harmful chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) that can cause skin irritation and even cancer.

Some people prefer the foamy cleansers as they have oily skin and these harsh cleansers are more drying. However, the risk is not worth it. Whether you have sensitive skin or not, you’re better off using a mild cleanser that doesn’t foam too much – don’t worry, it can clean your skin just as well as the foamy ones.

Mistake #2: Forgetting to tone

So you’ve washed your face with cleanser. That must mean it’s clean, right?

You’d be surprised how much dirt and grime cleansers can miss, plus, even the best of cleansers will leave a little residue behind. Use a toner to get rid of all of the dirt remaining on your face. Simply dispense a little bit of the fluid onto a clean cotton pad and wipe your face and neck. Trust me, the cotton pad will come away with grimy streaks.

Mistake #3: Over-exfoliating and over washing

Exfoliating is pretty important – it sloughs away dead skin cells and allows new skin cells some room to breathe. Plus, it improves blood circulation and enables your skin to glow with health and vitality. However, over-exfoliating your skin can leave it raw and sensitive. It can also remove necessary oils from your face, leaving your face dull and dry. Don’t exfoliate more than twice a week.

Similarly, over washing your face can strip all the necessary oils from it and leave it dull and dry. It can also cause blackheads as when your skin feels too dry, your body will overproduce oils to rehydrate it and these oils will clog your pores, thus forming blackheads. Aim to wash your face only twice a day with tepid water.

Mistake #4: Remove your makeup before falling asleep

After a long day at work or a long night at the clubs, it’s pretty tempting to fall into your soft bed and just go to sleep. However, you must remove your makeup first! Otherwise, you run the risk of waking up with a face full of pimples.

When you leave makeup on overnight, your skin does not get a chance to breathe and your pores will get clogged. In addition to pimples, this can lead to skin pigmentation, bacterial infections, and scars. We know it’s tiring to have to remove all that makeup when your comfortable bed is calling to you, but the consequences are just not worth it.

Keep a box of makeup wipes on your bedside table for those nights when you really can’t drag yourself to the bathroom to remove all that makeup. A quick face wipe is better than nothing!

Mistake #5: Watch what your skin comes into contact with!

Throughout the day, your skin is exposed to all sorts of dirt, grime, and bacteria. Sometimes, it’s unavoidable, like when you’re walking down the street and you walk straight into a cloud of cigarette smoke. This is why it’s important to wash your face every night before bed.

However, do try to avoid contact with your skin as much as possible. Don’t touch your face – your hands have all kinds of dirt and bacteria on them (especially if you have long nails!). After all, you do use your hands for everything, and you don’t want to be transferring all that bacteria to your face as it will lead to breakouts and blackheads.

Change your pillowcases frequently too. You should be changing it at least once a week. The sweat and oil from your face get transferred to your pillowcase as you sleep every night, and it accumulates. This can cause breakouts.
